Mairwar: Altered, Impacted, Contained

As part of the 2025 Volatile Terrain Exhibition, at The Condensery, the regional gallery of Somerset Regional Council, QLD, this series of photographic work unveils the profound transformation of Mairwar, known colonially as the Brisbane River, in the wake of Wivenhoe Dam’s construction.

By interweaving contemporary ground-level panoramic photographs with archival aerial imagery, the artwork presents a layered and multifaceted perspective of a landscape, which through government intervention has irrevocably changed.

In these compositions, we witness the sprawling expanse of Lake Wivenhoe juxtaposed against the river’s former serpentine path through the Brisbane Valley bordered by the DÁguilar range.
